Shooting Ear Muffs Archives

either stops working for a day or 2 or has a loud beep for a while, I friggin hate wearing earplugs like im at a gun range
i know my left ear now works less than half,i dont really shoot much anymore. i think it’s just from all the abuse it took while i was in the navy, right ears good though.
thanks for the advice, hey I was young and dumb and really know how horrible it is to have a bum ear,it throws your whole equalibrium off,and messes your speech all up.i really feel for deaf people. I think my left has always been more sensitive,i remember popping fire crackers when i was around 6 and my left ear would ring for a day or so. I atleast now have an appreciation for hearing now and am pretty sure i’ll wear some kind of ppe for my ears in the future, thanks for the suggestions, I now realize why I hate actors in movies shooting guns all over the place without a care in the world, cause it’s some fake a#% sh#$!!

Rate my character’s spells.?

Since it didn’t get any answers the first time, I’m re-posting it for feedback. For the last time: I used to be Wiccan, and I’m aware these spells are not true spells, I created them. They are holy (and demon) spells created for my D.Gray-Man fanfiction. It is a manga/anime about Akumas (demons) and Exorcists (holy fighters who destroy them). Innocence is the power that Exorcists possess to destroy the Akuma, who are trying to kill all humans.
Please rate my spells which are ENTIRELY made up by myself, and are fictional.
D.Gray-Man and it’s characters (Lavi, Allen) are not created by me. Shiranani is created by me, and is part Exorcist and Akuma. Feel free to use these spells in any D.Gray-man fanfictions or any other story.

These are the spells he already has and please note, he doesn’t get them all at once:

Dragon’s Triumph: This is a low level spell that creates the image of a dragon in fire, similar to one of Lavi’s hammer spells.

Rain of Fire: This is a low level spell that rains down “firehail” on the Akuma.

Field of Fire: This is a protection spell that creates a ring of fire around Shiranai and his allies.

Blessed Rains: This is a healing spell that heals minor injuries of Shiranai and his allies. Can not revive the dead, and is only effective if the target is awakened.

Mirror Of Light: This is a medium level spell which creates a mirror image of the Akuma, which attacks the Akuma. The only problem is that Shiranai’s soul is temporarily switched into the image’s body, so he cannot move or defend himself. Also, the injuries the image gets is inflicted on Shiranai.

Holy Wall: This is a defense spell that creates a wall that an Akuma can not get though without doing great damage to itself.

Akuma Bullet: This is… the Akuma bullet, of course. The bullet shoots out of Shiranai’s hand, and the human it hits is infected with Akuma blood.

Black Span: This creates a poisonous fog, although it can be avoided with masks or handkerchiefs. Still, this will force the enemy to let it’s guard down, giving Shiranai a moment to attack.
Tiger’s Claw: This spell is not really a spell at all, it just lengthens Shiranai’s nails, and gives him a more powerful blow.

Akuma’s leech: This spell will leech the human’s life force away, and heal Shiranai in return. The power of the spell depends on how much damage Shiranai has taken: the more damage he has taken, the more life he’ll need to suck away.

Exorcism: Exorcism is just like one of Allen’s spells with his evolved Akuma hand. It creates a cross of light that destroys level one and level two Akumas in one hit.

Anti-Akuma’s Curse: This is a curse that slowly turns the Akumas insane, eventually causing them to self destruct. The curse takes awhile to work though.

Scream of Tainted Souls: This spell works more as a distraction then anything. The noise of the scream is so piercing, the Akumas can no longer fight, and their defenses and powers will weaken. It also works on humans though, so unless his allies have earplugs, it’s not the most used spell.

The Chain of Blood- This spell will sacrifice Shiranai’s innocence, but will also destroy literally everything he targets, causing them to turn inside out and then explode. He targets using chains of light.

This Bird Is Driving Me Nuts!!?

Ok, the idiot thing starts singing its fool lungs out at friggin 2:00 AM, and doesn’t stop until well past sunrise. It’s loud, obnoxious, and right next to my window somewhere. (Some tree nearby no doubt) It sounds just like robin song but I know of no robin that retarded. Could it be a mockingbird? I know they mimic the song of other birds and sounds, and they stay up at night.

Does anybody know anything about birds that would help me identify this pest and control the racket in a humane manner? I mean to say, I don’t want to shoot the beast out of the tree or anything, but is there anything else I can do to evict him? He’s awful! Or at least, if anyone has knowledge of birds, can you tell me if this is a temporary phase, and if so, how long does it last? Thanks.

Here’s to the earplugs for now…

The weapons of our troops?

i belong to a gun club and i shoot shotguns and rifles and i know that they are very loud but i wear large earmuffs to protect my ears. The weapons in the army are much more powerful than a .22 rifle or a .20 shotgun, do people in the army go deaf from just firing their weapon or do they have ear protection in their helmets?

What is the best hearing protection ?

My daughter has cerebral palsy but has hunted with me and her brother for years. Her condition causes her to be startled by sudden loud noises very easily. She hate the gun range and refuses to go. She shoots a bb gun with a red dot scope at home and is ready to move to a 22 but I need the best thing to muffle the sound thats available. She jumps so bad at loud noises that she nearly jumps out of her chair when I shoot from our blind. We currently use earplugs plus and muff type protection. Is there anything better?

My suitemate won’t shut the f*ck up! Help?

I have told her that she was loud before. I even had the dorm authority talk to her about her loudness. She talks so freaking loud of her cell phone. She can’t help it. She just has a big loud voice and I wish she could shut her big fat f*cking mouth. I wear earplugs and can still kinda hear her. What can I do. Shoot her? I think she’s a little hard of hearing. I give up.

Can you recommend a better pair of ear muffs?

Hi, I’m going to get a pair of ear muffs to take to the shooting range. I found these ear muffs (only about $20)

http://www.coopersafety.com/item/101034/Bilsom-Leightning-L3-Headband-Earmuffs.aspx

Do you guys know if there is a better pair of ear muffs IN THAT GENERAL PRICE RANGE? I know that for $200, I could probably get something better. But in that general price range, do you know if there is anything better? I don’t want to go over $30. And yes, I will be wearing the foam inserts in addition to the ear muffs. I would really appreciate some guidance.

I have very sensitive hearing. About two years ago, I went to a shooting range and fired some guns. Even though I was wearing ear protection, it did some sort of damage and now most movie theatres, bars/clubs and school classrooms are too noisy. I have seen plenty of doctors and am running out of options.

I want to figure out a way to reduce environmental sounds without completely blocking them out, so earplugs are not an option. I have to still be able to hear people speak. Does anyone know if wireless noise-canceling earphones are an available product? A Google search revealed nothing. Over-ear headphones are too conspicuous.

Has anyone tried this or have a similar problem and figured something out?
I’ve already tried earplugs. They block out too much noise.

Ear ringing help please!?

Ok so today (like any other day) I went into my backyard firing range and let off a few shots from my 1943 Mosin Nagant M44 rifle. I haven’t been wearing earplugs or any such ear protection as of late and it hadn’t effected me….until today. Back to my dilemma, after shooting only 15 rounds I decided to call it a day. I put the rifle and ammunition back in my safe and went on with the day, but now I hear constant ringing in my left ear and it wont go away (put it has before) an I dont know what to do. It is also bothersome due to the fact that I am right handed, so why the ringing in my left ear?

Can anyone help me I’m going crazy with the constant ringing!!!!

Regards,

Darrin

help. earmuff things.?

Why do people wear those earmuff looking things while they shoot guns and what are they called?

Ear Pain due to weapon firing? Little Worried?

Hey all, yesterday I was at the range firing a rifle. After getting finished, and walking over to a new area, I could sense ringing in my left ear. (I’ve had my ears temporarily ring for a few seconds after shooting before, it wasn’t like this). It probably rang for a good 35-45 minutes. And inside my ear felt numb for another 3 hours. After that, I felt normal whe once and awhile it would feel numb or a quick ring for seconds to a minute.

Today, I still can still feel it from time to time. It is very minimal, but it is still there. I have no hearing loss whatsoever (from what I can tell), and am hearing out of the ear completely fine. Should I go to the doctor to get it checked out? I know nothing about this, and am a little worried, and would like to be on the safer side. (I did wear hearing protection, but they were the crappy reusable foam earplugs and I guess the one in my left ear wasn’t in all the way).

I want to be on the safer side. I can hear fine. I’m guessing it’s just a little bruised from the noise yesterday, but as I said, I have no experience in this. If anybody has experience in this, any insight would be helpful. Thank you.

Grounds for Divorce #2

They say breaking up is hard to do, but

that wasn’t the case for these people.
Whether they were picked on or just

picky, can you figure out the real

his wife because she “she beat him

whenever he….

a) removed onions from his hamburger
b) went to sleep
c) left his mail on the kitchen table

….without first asking for
permission.”

2- In Frackville, Pennsylvania, a

woman filed for divorce because her

husband insisted on….

a) vandalizing mailboxes
b) shooting tin cans off her head
c) chasing their pet cat

….with a slingshot.

3- One Winthrop, Maine, a man divorced

his wife because she….

a) left her underwear on the couch
b) spit in the coffee
c) wore earplugs

….whenever his mother came to

visit.

1- a (salute him and address him as “Major”)

2- c (put itching powder in her underwere)

3- a (peas: pea soup for breakfast

Traveling in Texas with a pistol in my car?

When I go to the shooting range, I have a pelican case (which I use for my range bag) that holds my unloaded Springfield XD9, boxes of ammo, glasses, earmuffs, and tools.

Is that legal to have in the trunk of my car if i’m traveling to the range and back? It’s got a lock on the pelican case, and it stays locked until I get to the range.

Lately, I’ve been hearing that the pistol needs to be in one box, and the ammo kept seperate in another box.

I don’t have a concealed weapons license, so I just want to make sure I’m in the right.

Also, would it be okay to take it traveling with me? For instance, when I go visit family out of town, I keep it in the back of the trunk. Most of my family has guns, so we go shooting whenever we can.

Looking for advice. Thank You!

Gunshot Frequency Spectrum, 9mm Luger?

Hi all,

I’ll probably test this myself next time I go to a range, but I want to see if anyone here happens to know this.

Last time I was out shooting, I fired off two rounds of 9mm Luger (subsonic ammunition) without earplugs so that I can know what it sounds like - that way, should I ever have to use it in a defensive situation, I’ll know what to expect it to sound like.

What I heard was surprising. Unlike the low-pitched “thud” it makes while wearing hearing protection, it sounded like a high-pitched crack and left a single frequency ringing in my ears for the following ten seconds. (before anyone says anything, I do know exactly what causes the ringing and that it should be avoided. Like I said, these were the only two shots I plan to do in my life without earplugs)

This has gotten me curious as to what the waveform and frequency spectrum of a 9mm gunshot is.

I also wonder if the ringing - caused by the damaged complicated receptors in the ear - is on the fundamental frequency of the gunshot….

If anyone knows anything about either of those two subjects, your input is welcome!
This is a response to the first response:

I know the shockwave from the bullet itself can me modeled roughly like:

u(t) * e^(-k*T)

Or something similar in place of the exponential - either way, it’s the same idea.

That, yes, is an impulse, and its fourier or laplace transform (which are really the same thing) will give you its frequency spectrum.

However, there’s another source of noise: the rocket-engine that the barrel becomes after the bullet leaves. It actually has a different response, which adds to the frequency content.

I was hoping someone would actually have a graph of the frequency content of the bullet’s shockwave and the barrel-blast shockwave.

However, thinking about this more, you couldn’t really distinguish them with sub-sonic ammunition unless you used blanks to characterize the blast, but even that’s different…

The tone I heard by the way was about 10 kHz with no harmonics.

Cockatiel who screams 24/7…?

I have a male cockatiel I’ve had for about 10 years. He’s getting up there in age. Anywho, I also had a female companion with him, and earlier in the year (About four months ago) she died. I had her about 12-13 years. My father was the one who physically removed her remains from the cage and I proceeded to bury her.

Now, this is where the annoyance comes in.

He (Mr. P, the bird), screams 24/7. Not sings, screams. Usually short bursts, which is a very loud chirp in a series of two at a time.

He will continue this, regardless of what is going on around him, UNTIL…

My father comes home. The moment he sees my father he shuts up (Praise FSM). I have tried EVERYTHING to get him to shut up during the day to no avail. This wouldn’t be so bad but I’m a currently ill (Nasty head cold) stay at home student (online) who’s looking for another job (Laid off in August). I can’t take him anymore. It’s an ear piercing, eardrum rupturing howl that physically aches my head every time he does it, and it penetrates doors, earplugs, pillows, everything.

Short of strangling him, giving him away, shooting him, letting a cat eat him and letting him fly away outside…

I’ve tried giving him mirrors, he isn’t having it.
I’ve tried leaving the TV on, no luck.
I’ve tried handling him, nope.
I’ve tried talking to him, still nope.
I’ve tried recording other birds singing and replaying it for him, not gonna take it.
I’ve tried covering the cage, nope.

Ugh!! I’m at my wit’s end!!! Please help me before I murder this bird!

We’re hesitant to get another bird because if they get attached to him and when he goes… won’t we be back to square one?
It’s my father, not grandfather. :P I understand the two year old thing, but can he really remember his mate? That was earlier in the year, and I can’t imagine they’ve got too advanced of a brain. Is he still screaming out of sorrow or is he screaming just to scream? I’ve never had a cockatiel do this before.
Good advice Colette, I’ll bring up what you mentioned to the rest of the family.

The only thing that I can’t understand is what he’s getting out of this. It pisses my father off as much as it pisses the rest of us off, and he’s resorted to spraying him with a mist of water to get him to shush. He had attention before and after his mate died, so I simply just don’t understand.

But, thank you very much. I’ll take into consideration what you’ve told me. =)

how many decibels is a .22 .38 9mm .44 .45?

and what are the cheapest but best earmuffs to wear and also the guns .22 .38 9mm .44 .45
are in a concreat shooting range first one to answer gets best answer

I personally went to an open air gun range, I took off my ear muffs and fired 10 .223 rounds off my AR-15 rifle. My ears were hurting and kept ringing for 45 seconds. I’m glad the ringing stopped, I took an Advil, drank some water, and I began to feel better.
I believe that fighting insurgents in Iraq with earmuffs is a disadvantage. I find it quite uncomfortable to shoot without the earmuffs in CQB simulations at the gun range. I just want to know if they use some form of hearing protection whenever they fight insurgents or make raids against Al Qaeda?

I searched this question and to my dismay, they were all answered. Apparently nobody wants to give an appropriate answer apart from stating that they don’t make them, or giving the complete history of ear plugs, there qualities and the decibel level reduction that a manufacturer states the ear plug will achieve. I spent the past few months trying to come up with a solution that works the best. My trials were done to achieve the most peaceful night’s sleep that I could get due to the fact that my neighbors are the loudest and most inconsiderate group of people that the world has ever known. I tried Mack’s safe sound, and I used them for years. But at least once a week my neighbor upstairs decides to do a 5 hour hunt for some unknown object that requires her to stomp around her bedroom as though she is killing ants on her way. In an evening of desperation, I took out my ear muffs (headphone style) that I use at the shooting range and tried to sleep with those on. I am not a back sleeper, so this worked as a temporary fix and I got about 2 hours sleep that night. As a last ditch effort, I started looking online and came across this very question that I have posted here. Again to my dismay, no answer was good enough, yet they were all resolved; what is up with that? It doesn’t have to be the right answer, just as long as someone answers? Well, I have found a solution! Not some ridiculous scheme, not something you have to build, but rather a combination of what was suggested among various answers and non answers. Here it is and it is simple:

To achieve ZERO NOISE! with ear plugs

Howard Leight 33dB soft foam earplugs (Must be the flange type)
MACK’s Pillow Soft Silicone Wax earplugs (The white ones that look like candy)

1st - insert the Howard Leight earplugs as instructed, I REPEAT AS INSTRUCTED!
2nd - take the Mack’s earplug and flatten it out AS INSTRUCTED, and form it over the Howard Leight earplug. press so that it takes the form of the outer ear, but only do it so that it covers the other earplug and makes a good seal.

By doing this, you are essentially doubling the effectiveness of your earplug. you are adding a 22dB ear plug to a 33dB ear plug

NOTICE:
The reason why I recommend the Howard Leight earplug is that it is flanged. No matter how hard I try, I can’t get it pushed into my ear canal any further than the flange. (DOESN’T MEAN YOU CAN’T) so be careful when you first start trying this!

Ok, so maybe it’s not zero noise, but it comes damn close. Closer than any product on the market that I can find. I tried this today with my neighbor blasting music and vacuuming, and construction going on next door. I was able to get a good nap in, and I didn’t hear a thing.

I have fired my AR-15 in a closed room without hearing protection before and I became disoriented quickly. I fired 7 shots and I couldn’t take the pain in my ears no more. My ears kept on ringing for 3 days straight, but now my hearing has come back to normal. I was doing some close quarter combat training in an old abandoned house that is on my property.
I sat down to think, that if one day the fertilizer hit the fan and I had to defend my family in an urban environment. I had to choose between my ability to hear and my survival. I now use earmuffs and earplugs when I go to the shooting range, but I have problems hearing anything that is happening, like when someone steps on a twig in a forest or locks and loads their gun.
I have never done this, but does cotton wool offer a shooting hearing protection without the shooter losing awareness of what is happening around him?

Tease Your Brain With These One Liners?

If blind people wear dark glasses, why dont deaf people wear earmuffs?
Why do signs that say “slow children” have a picture of a running child?
Could it be that all the trick-or-treaters dressed in sheets are going as mattresses, not ghosts?
If someone with multiple identies threatens to kill himself, is is considered a hostage situation?
Isnt it a bit unnerving that doctors call their work “practice”?
Why do they lovk gas station bathrooms? Are they afraid someone will clean them?
Why do they put braille on drive through bank machines?
How do they get deer to cross at that yellow sign?
If you try to fail, and succeed, which have you done?
Why is it called tourist season if we cant shoot them?
One nice thing about egotists-they dont talk about other people.
If police arrest a mime, do they tell him he has the right to remain silent?
Where do forest rangers go to ‘get away from it all’?
If a mute swears, does his mother wash his hands with soap?
